Festival of lights...

Image
With a flurry of lights, Leaving a trail of smoke behind, A loud sound is heard beyond a mile. They celebrate the festival of lights, Content and with a smile. Going out and about town Adorning new clothes, In various hues and style, They celebrate the festival of lights, Content and with a smile. I look at them wistfully, And then look at my house, The goddess of wealth hasn't yet, Blessed it with her presence, New clothes, crackers and the works, Are difficult for a daily wage earner to afford, As I see the silent yearning in the eyes of my kin, I know it will be a while, Before we celebrate the festival of lights, Content and with a smile! Even the smallest gesture from your end will go a long way in brightening up someone's Diwali.  This year, spare some thought and try turning Diwali into a festival of smiles.  Hope you have a noise free and safe Diwali!

Shame.

Mom, I always told you I am brave, but right now,  only for your arms do I crave, The monster scares me and leaves me in pain., I bravely tried to resist but it was all in vain, I see some blood and my clothes are all torn, Mom, please just come and take me home! On the other side of this door, My friends play their game, My muffled screams are too weak for them to hear me call their name. I shiver in fear, bare and alone,  Mom, why don't you take me home? P.S. This poem is just a futile attempt at trying to bring out what the five year old rape victim must have gone through. I don't think anyone can know exactly how that little child must have felt then. The monstrosity and remorselessness has crossed all boundaries. Maybe humanity is dead and what's left are just carcasses.

An open letter to Politicians, God men and all those who have taken it upon themselves to enlighten us...

Dear Sirs/ Madams, I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude towards you for enlightening us women as to why when we do certain things; we call upon ourselves the inevitable circumstance of getting raped. Had you not stepped upon the mantle to highlight what we dented and painted women do, we would have stayed in the darkness of ignorance and continued to get raped and hoped for justice only stemming out of the wrong belief that the rapist is the criminal and not us. Your efforts at highlighting our “mistakes” and “invitation for rape” are surely noteworthy. It’s only because of you that we have realized that staying out of the house late at night, having a male companion who is not a brother or husband, wearing skirts and other provocative clothing, not going home strait away from school or college, listening to western music, having a mobile phone, staying in India and not Bharat mean an invitation that reads “I have crossed the Lakshma...

My dignity and pride...

Image
I was a little girl living in a world so pure and without any lies, A day came and I was no longer the girl with innocent eyes. You ripped apart my clothes aiming to take away my dignity, I resisted all I could but, my physical strength failed compared to your insanity. I couldn't understand then what was happening to me, I only saw a known face, But the animal behind it, I couldn't see. You got your pleasure and fulfilled your greed and lust, Leaving me there in pain, and a shattered trust. The wounds given by you on the surface have healed, Its the wounds inside that still hurt and profusely bleed. These wounds won't go away, no matter how much I tried, But, I will smile again as I will always have in me, My dignity and pride.

Gift of Gyaan.

Image
October brings along a great opportunity for all to play a small part in a huge cause i.e. education of the underprivileged children. Gyaan exchange , a start-up company, in association with its NGO partner  Goonj  has organised a BOOK COLLECTION DRIVE in all the major metros of India until 10th October, 2012. Gyaan exchange is an online community where anybody with a skill, knowledge or idea can teach and anyone with a desire to gain knowledge can learn new things. Gyaan exchange aims to collect at least 500 books through this drive and has volunteered to give them to their NGO partner Goonj.  Goonj works as a medium in channelizing the unused materials lying idle in our urban homes to far flung villages where people don’t have access to the basic essentials for living. If you have any questions about the NGO, you can find your answers  here . All you have to do to make a contribution is go to your book shelves, pick up the books you ...

Soak no more...

Image
A lot has been happening around us. And in some way, almost everything that makes it to the news these days, is a story of the victory of wrong over right. Truth over lies. Hatred over Lies and Insanity over Sanity. We watch the news. Our reactions range from the typical " Iss desh ka kuch nahi ho sakta" to "I want to change things but i don't know how." Our contribution ends there.  We make sure that nothing has happened to the ones we love.Make sure that our little world is alright. Then change the channel and the thought is out of our minds. This apathy is our biggest problem and not the crimes that happen because of it. The cause is our indifference and the effect is the increased rates of crimes. I realize this as many of you do too. So when   The Surf Excel Matic SoakNoMore Contest  page on Indiblogger asks "What do you think of when you hear the words Soak No more" ? This is what I feel. Lust prevails, dignity loses...

"Say you love me"

Image
They slept close.Slowly, his hand slid inside her clothes. She didn't react, pretended to sleep. He touched her and it made her face him.She opened her mouth to ask but his lips stopped her.Withdrawing, he asked her, "say you love me", she could just nod.She does not remember what happened next except the excruciating pain enough to bring tears in her eyes. Next morning she asked him "I told you I love you then why did you hurt me bhaiya?" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This post is an attempt to highlight the fact that child abuse is not something that happens in others houses only.It could be happening right under our noses, making us ignorant. It is not something to be ashamed of and swept under the carpet in the name of society. With a little awareness from our side, we can make sure that it doesn't hurt to be a child. ----------------------------------------------------------...

Don't vote!

Image
Reading the title of this post might surprise you. But its true. This post is not to ask or request you to vote. There have been numerous debates, campaigns, articles etc. done on the same topic and the voter turnout remains disappointing. When people are asked to vote, they don't, so this time i am saying the opposite, might just work! Seriously, what is the significance of the voting day? Is it the biggest festival of the biggest democracy in the world or is it just another holiday? Which category do you fall in? If you are in the long weekend / holiday category, your ideal excuse (sorry, reason) would be, what difference is it going to make? There are so many people voting, how is my vote going to matter? We have such busy lives, a long weekend / holiday with family and friends will rejuvenate me for the week to come! Fair enough, your reason is valid. A long weekend / holiday is what we all crave for! This being acceptable, the other reason is not. At the risk of so...

Aap apni beti ki shaadi kab kar rahe ho?

Image
A daughter is born and the family starts planning of saving for "gifts" (don't use the "D" word...its too passe! Besides, we are modern people who don't support societal taboos) for here marriage. The girl grows up.She is sent to the same school as her brother. She is allowed to play with boys. She chooses to go to college. Not too far from home.A course is chosen for her to study further.its assessed not according to her interest but the time it will take to complete. Akhir shaadi bhi toh karni hai.Bas iski shaadi ho jaye toh hum bhi apni zimmedaari se mukt!  By the time the girl is on the right side on 25, every relative who she didn't even know ,existed, starts to pop up.Everybody is worried about her marriage .Rishtas sare suggested by "wellwishers".Everybody jumps on the marriage bandwagon in full force.A little thing is forgotten, that she aspires to work after getting a degree. But its irrelevant.

My Christmas...

Image
I wake up on a cold floor, No blanket for cover, My mom doesn't hug me, The stocking isn't filled, My tree is not that green, Snow doesn't seem too serene. Dad doesn't dress up as Santa, Sweets aren't meant for me I like them but, nobody gets any for me. I am the same as you, but not as fortunate, I too wish for toys new, But none do i get!

Ram wouldn't have liked it !

Image
Ram gave us two occasions to celebrate and go crazy ; Diwali and Dasera. Both are celebrated because they signify the victory of good over evil. The reality today is something else. Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is celebrated as the day Ram, Sita and Lakshman were welcomed back by the people of Ayodhya who lit diyas to welcome back their king after 14 years of vanvas. And thus its Diwali. If only Ram had heard a "rassi" or atom or whatever the green role bomb is called going off, he would have gone back to the "vann", craving its peace. The people then knew better. And we, who are supposedly "evolved" beings, have lost it.

Chotu and Choti.

Image
Every evening without fail he used to turn up at my place.Always on time, 7.30 sharp. He used to drop flowers at my front door.Mostly it was marigold.sometimes jasmine or lotus.Always neatly wrapped. He knew my preference very well.Never disappointed.I would go to my door and bring in the flowers long after he had left. The flowers used to make me smile. The fragrance too lingered on long after i had kept them aside. This was a routine now.As a matter of fact I liked getting those flowers from him.An unknown face gave me happiness everyday. One day, i happened to catch the reason behind my everyday delight. And it changed everything.

Say no to corruption !!

Image
Given the current times, I don't know how many people will agree with me.I going to attempt saying my viewpoint, nonetheless. I dont get the protest that is on right now.Everybody and anybody is jumping on the wagon to fight corruption. Its a mass rage. Its difficult to have a discussion without it veering towards "The fight against corruption" CORRUPTION.We have concluded its a dirty word.Something that should be eradicated completely.Every process that involves a government official is dreaded. When something doesn't work the way it should, we give up hope that anything can ever be good in the country."Sab chor hai" is something we say so frequently in context of the government and its officials. What we don't see is that the system of corruption involves two parties. The bribe taker and bribe giver. All of us have played the latter role, sometime. All of us, have at some point or other, opted for the easier way.Who will take the long way, if ther...

Where is the freedom???

Image
In the independence glory we bask, But where is the freedom I ask? Country has been free for 64 years... But have we got freedom from our fears?? Fear of life, Fear of death, Almost everyday, the tremors we get... Slavery of money, Slavery of norms, Slavery everywhere, just different forms.. Look at an Indian daughter, Obeying every whim of dear father.. Look at her give in to her in laws.. for her, its freedom with flaws. We were slaves of the foreign raj, rebelling we got back the "Taj"! But even today, there is something which binds.. that something is our own, its in our minds!

13/7 just another date?

Image
A normal day turned bloody!! The day after a bloody evening turns normal again.13/7 is it going to be just another date like the others??? Mumbai is shocked.Mumbai panics.Mumbai helps.Mumbai mourns.Mumbai cries.Mumbai questions.Mumbai listens to broken promises being made again.Mumbai sleeps it off.Mumbai is back to work the next day. Everybody salutes the so called "spirit of Mumbai" !! Its the same routine over and over again.Tragedy strikes,Innocents get hurt and die & Politicians make promises.... Nothing has changed except the form and reach of terror perpetrators. The media makes the gimmick out of the sensitive issues.Every channel competes to get an exclusive coverage of the happenings.Even at hospitals. The camera goes every where.Hapless victim families, in this moment of crises, have to face the encroachment by the camera. Media reports.System reacts.both use words.ONLY.No action.Just reaction. The funny part is that the CM of Maharashtra,who...
